Atlas Osteopathy

Condition

Neck Pain

Neck pain affects roughly 1 in 3 adults at any given time. The vast majority is mechanical, driven by posture, muscular tension and joint stiffness, and responds well to focused osteopathic care.

Symptoms

How it usually shows up.

  • Stiffness, especially in the morning or after long periods at a desk
  • Pain radiating into the shoulder, upper back or arm
  • Headaches at the base of the skull
  • Restricted range of motion when turning the head
  • 'Pinching' or sharp pain with specific movements

Causes

Why this happens.

  • Sustained desk posture and screen use
  • Sleeping in awkward positions or with the wrong pillow
  • Acute strain (sudden movement, fall, sports incident)
  • Stress-related tension in the upper trapezius and suboccipitals
  • Underlying degenerative change in the cervical spine

How we help

The Atlas approach.

Detailed assessment of the cervical spine, thoracic spine and shoulder girdle, most neck pain has contributing factors above and below the symptomatic area. Treatment combines soft-tissue release through the neck and upper back, mobilisation of stiff segments, and (when indicated) gentle manipulation. We always pair treatment with workspace and sleep-posture advice, the change between sessions matters.

What you can do today.

  • Set your screen at eye level and keep your keyboard close
  • Take a 30-second movement break every 30 minutes
  • Use a contoured pillow that supports the natural curve of the neck
  • Apply heat to the upper trapezius for 15 minutes at the end of a long day

When to seek urgent help

If you experience any of these, see your GP or A&E rather than waiting for an osteopathy appointment:

  • Severe pain following a significant trauma
  • Numbness, weakness or pins and needles down the arm
  • Loss of fine motor control in the hand
  • Dizziness, visual disturbance or facial numbness with neck movement

FAQs

Common questions.

Will my neck 'click' during treatment?
Sometimes, high-velocity manipulation is one tool we use when appropriate. We'll always explain what we're doing first and you can opt out if you'd prefer alternative techniques. There are many ways to skin a cat.
Why does my neck hurt every morning?
Often a combination of pillow height/shape, sleeping posture, and accumulated daytime tension. We'll work through all three at your assessment.
